Pick the size from the wall, not from the price list. The most common mistake is going too small — a canvas that looked generous on a screen can disappear above a sofa. Here is what each size actually suits.
Canvas sizes at a glance
| Size | Shape | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 12 x 12 in | Square | A single close-up. Phone photos shot square. Works in a group of several. |
| 20 x 20 in | Square | Enough room for detail. Pairs well with other 20 x 20s. |
| 30 x 30 in | Square | A statement piece. Needs a large room and height. |
| 12 x 18 in | Rectangle | Portrait-orientation photos. Hallways and narrow walls. |
| 20 x 30 in | Rectangle | The safe all-rounder. Family photos, landscapes, either orientation. |
| 30 x 40 in | Rectangle | Above a sofa or bed. Wide landscape shots. |
How to choose the size
Measure the wall first
A useful rule for a canvas going above furniture: aim for roughly two thirds the width of the sofa, bed or sideboard beneath it. Anything much narrower looks stranded.
Match the shape to the photo
A square crop of a rectangular photo means losing something at the edges. If the photo is landscape and there is detail near the sides, choose a rectangle. If the subject is central and tightly framed, a square works and often looks more deliberate.
Consider the room, not just the wall
Small canvases get lost in a large room with high ceilings. Large canvases dominate a small one. If in doubt in a big space, go one size up rather than down.
Plan a group before you order
For a gallery wall, matching sizes read as calm and deliberate; mixed sizes read as collected over time. Both work — but decide which you are doing before ordering, not after.
Will my photo be sharp enough?
This is the one that catches people out. A larger canvas needs a higher-resolution file, and enlarging a small image will not add detail that was never there.
- Send the original file from your phone or camera, not a screenshot.
- Avoid images saved from Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp — all three compress heavily.
- If the only copy you have is small, tell us before ordering and we will check whether it will hold up at the size you want.
We quality-check every order before printing. If your image will not work well at the size you have chosen, we email you rather than printing it anyway. Our photo guide covers this in more detail.
Common questions
What is the most popular canvas size?
20 x 30 inches. It suits both portrait and landscape photos and fits most living room walls without dominating them.
What size canvas goes above a sofa?
30 x 40 inches for a standard three-seater, or a pair of 20 x 20s. Aim for around two thirds of the sofa width in total.
Can I get a size that is not listed?
Often, yes. Ask us before ordering and we will tell you what is possible.
